Colorful Fishes and Complex Drawings

(FYI..I have an encyclopedia by species if you want to see what each species looks like).
I think my skills are finally up to tackling some of the more complex fish species out there, so I drew up a few over the holidays. The simple Jacksmelt was added because I catch them all the time off the piers of SoCal, and sandbar shark because they are in the surf all the time on the east coast, as warm-up. Then I added a few species of triggerfish, including: Orange-lined,  Redtail Triggerfish (found in California and Baja), Titan (found in the tropical Pacific and Indian Oceans), and Niger Redtoothed Triggerfish(found in the Indo-Pacific too).  I also added a few salmonids that are complex including Gila trout (New Mexico and Arizona), and Masu (Cherry) Salmon (from Japan).

Pacific salmonids are really interesting as a genus. The trout species are likely descended from 'precocious par' or juvenile looking fish that get reproductive before the go to sea, that got trapped inland by various geological events.  These include rainbow trout, golden trout, Gila trout, cutthroat trout, redband trout, and relatives.  The salmons (like Coho, Chinook, Pink, Sockeye/Kokanee, and Masu)  are the one that spawn mature, and die soon after...the ultimate in 'dying to love' scenario.  Now the interesting questions are for sea-run cutthroats and steelhead. Likely after becoming the trout form, they got a chance to reconnect with the ocean? Note that some steelhead/rainbow trout go 'steel' event after being separated from the big water for many generations.

Look for deep ocean toothy fish like viperfish, dragonfish, and tuna in spoonflower in the next few weeks as I dig through what I have.

Cloth, Wrap, wallpaper and such

Hello fish art fans :0)

I have started to scientifically analyze my pile of fish drawings and field them 30 at a time to my spoonflower presence at https://www.spoonflower.com/profiles/combatfish so anyone can buy them on wallpaper, cloth for clothing and decor, and wrapping paper (which can also end up as many decor items and projects).

Latest adds include: Mekong giant catfish, mosasaurs, anglerfish, cod, hake, dunkleosteus, oarfish,
coelacanth
and one of my favorite fossil fish the

 xiphactinus audax (too bad it is extinct, would have been a VERY interesting catch!) among several others.  Look for multiple versions, sizes, and abstractions of each species available in my store to add variety. Likely I will have a shirt and towels made of some of them.   My nieces and nephews like the wrapping paper, since the chop out each fish to use in play or to stick in scrap books and collages.

Giant Carp (aka Giant Barb)
Drew up a monster river fish from Southeast Asia I have wanted to do for a while: the Giant Carp also known as the Giant Barb. (scientifically (Catlocarpio siamensis) ). It is a endangered fish that gets to over 600lbs (300kg) and like grass carp lacks barbs, though has the typical coarse scales of most minnows (i.e. barbs and carps).  A full grown fish from Thailand or Cambodia would be as big as a motorcycle or subcompact car.
