More butterflyfish

More Butterflyfish drawings!

Drew up two similar butterflyfish: Chevron and Atoll.

Chevron butterflyfish (Chaetodon trifascialis) is a saltwater reef fish of the Indian and Pacific oceans including the Red Sea, and has lots of arrow marks (like sergeant stripes sideways).

A close relative, same genus is the Atoll Butterflyfish (Chaetodon mertensii)  hangs out on tropical Pacific Reefs.
Note the similar species to the Atoll Butterflyfish: Chaetodon madagascariensis  Indian Ocean, Chaetodon xanthurus , and Chaetodon paucifasciatus Red Sea.  Making something a species versus just a population is a big deal in the fishery biologist community, and can spark heated debate if the animals in question all look the same. Whole careers for some hinge on finding a species, and if you want to watch college professors yell at each other, ask them to prove their favorite is actually a species.

Look for a whole pile of other fishes, including groupers, in my spoonflower site soon too.

Latest Fishes and Designs

Drew up a few of the more interesting groupers out there.

  1. Strawberry Hind (Grouper, Kitty Mitchell)(Cephalopholis spiloparaea): My brothers and I have caught many strawberry groupers over the years in the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean, always putting them back (too small anyhow). These colorful aggressive little groupers (hinds) would be great in an aquarium to be sure, with their pink and red coloration and spots, though I am sure any other fish would be dinner.
  2. Coral Hind (Coral Trout)(Cephalopholis miniata): This colorful fish is found off the Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean Reefs including the Red Sea and Great Barrier Reef.  Again a little grouper that likes reefs.
  3. Misty Grouper (Hyporthodus mystacinus): This is a deep water grouper found from 300 feet on down, on ledges and deep wrecks and reefs.

Tight lines,

Colorful Fishes and complex drawings

Colorful Fishes and Complex Drawings

(FYI..I have an encyclopedia by species if you want to see what each species looks like).
I think my skills are finally up to tackling some of the more complex fish species out there, so I drew up a few over the holidays. The simple Jacksmelt was added because I catch them all the time off the piers of SoCal, and sandbar shark because they are in the surf all the time on the east coast, as warm-up. Then I added a few species of triggerfish, including: Orange-linedRedtail Triggerfish (found in California and Baja), Titan (found in the tropical Pacific and Indian Oceans), and Niger Redtoothed Triggerfish(found in the Indo-Pacific too).  I also added a few salmonids that are complex including Gila trout (New Mexico and Arizona), and Masu (Cherry) Salmon (from Japan).

Pacific salmonids are really interesting as a genus. The trout species are likely descended from 'precocious par' or juvenile looking fish that get reproductive before the go to sea, that got trapped inland by various geological events.  These include rainbow trout, golden trout, Gila trout, cutthroat trout, redband trout, and relatives.  The salmons (like Coho, Chinook, Pink, Sockeye/Kokanee, and Masu)  are the one that spawn mature, and die soon after...the ultimate in 'dying to love' scenario.  Now the interesting questions are for sea-run cutthroats and steelhead. Likely after becoming the trout form, they got a chance to reconnect with the ocean? Note that some steelhead/rainbow trout go 'steel' event after being separated from the big water for many generations.

Note if it appears in my Cafepress or DBH sites, it is also in my Spoonflower site on cloth and wallpaper (or soon will be).

Life is amazing!

Make us both money, and Piles and Piles of Fishes and Whales on Material

You make money and I make money:
I am often asked if you can order my designs on cloth via spoonflower (yes) then make something from it an sell it (of course).

Since I make money on the sale of cloth from spoonflower for my designs, then anything that make you want to buy more cloth works for me :0)

example: Jane buy 10 yards of Ribbon seals on purple (https://www.spoonflower.com/en/fabric/7132790-ribbon-seal-on-purple-by-combatfish) then makes 5 shirts using the cloth and sells them in her shop. I made my money on the 10 yards of cloth she bought, she makes her money selling the 5 shirts. We are both happy :0) Hopefully Jane then buys more cloth, to make more shirts, making me and her more money :0)

If you do decide to go that route fyi, Spoonflower has bulk pricing and Pro versions for small business owners...and grants too.
ex:
https://try.spoonflower.com/promos/
https://www.spoonflower.com/wholesale

so make us both rich LOL :0)
p.s.
Posted on the order of several dozen designs on spoonflower (https://www.spoonflower.com/profiles/combatfish )
Mostly fishes that have yet to be pushed to cloth and wallpaper, thus onto furniture and housewares.
In time to make cool gifts for all the fall and winter holidays.

Refresher: Where is all my art?

In addition to books (on amazon, look for my author page ),
my art is purchasable in these venues:

  • Offshore fish in action shop (Sharks, Tunas, Swordfish, Dorado, etc.)

  • Northern freshwater fishes including salmon, trout, walleye
  • If all that sounds confusing, there is a cool, pictorial catalog that has almost everything (some DBH, spoonflower patterns are not in it to avoid clutter): http://www.combat-fishing.com/DesignFishCafeCatalog.html

    More tuna etc.
Look for deep ocean toothy fish like viperfish, dragonfish, and tuna in spoonflower in the next few weeks as I dig through what I have.

    Monday, June 10, 2019

Look for a variety of new cloth and house-ware designs on my spoon flower site (https://www.spoonflower.com/profiles/combatfish/). Been digging up all my sharks, tuna, rockfish, and ocean fish designs that have yet to be put in the spoonflower/roostery world, so they will pop in 30 at a time.
